The Modern Garden Build Process: From Design to Completion

A professional garden project is far more than “lay a patio and add some plants”. The best results come from a structured process: understanding how you want to live outside, designing the layout and details properly, and building it with the right groundwork, drainage, electrics and finishing.

In this guide, we walk through every stage of a modern garden build — from initial consultation to planting and aftercare — so you know exactly what to expect when working with a design-and-build team.

Overview: the 7 stages of a modern garden project

Stage 1: Consultation & site assessment
Stage 2: Design brief, measurements & concept layout
Stage 3: 3D visualisation, materials & final specification
Stage 4: Quotation, programme & pre-start planning
Stage 5: Groundworks, drainage & structural build
Stage 6: Hard landscaping, electrics & finishing details
Stage 7: Planting, handover & aftercare

Stage 1: Initial consultation & site assessment

What happens

Purpose: understand your goals, assess the site, and identify constraints early.

We start with a conversation about how you want to use the garden and what “success” looks like for you. Then we assess the site: levels, access, drainage behaviour, sunlight, overlooking, and any problem areas such as soggy lawns or water pooling.

  • Discuss lifestyle needs (dining, lounging, kids, pets, privacy)
  • Look at access routes for materials and waste removal
  • Check levels, slopes and likely drainage requirements
  • Agree design scope and budget expectations

Stage 2: Design brief, measurements & concept layout

What happens

Purpose: translate your goals into a clear layout with zones and circulation.

This is where the garden becomes a plan — not a collection of ideas. We measure accurately and develop a concept layout that defines the key zones (patio, seating, lawn, planting, screens, storage) and how you move through the space.

  • Full site measurements and key reference points
  • Zoning and flow: what goes where and why
  • Initial material direction (porcelain vs stone, fencing style, etc.)
  • Early thinking on lighting, electrics, irrigation and drainage routes
Great gardens feel effortless because the layout is disciplined: clear zones, strong lines, and purposeful views.

Stage 3: 3D visualisation, materials & final specification

What happens

Purpose: remove guesswork and lock decisions before build begins.

3D design helps you see the finished garden before we break ground — including how materials, lighting and planting work together. This is the stage where we refine details and finalise the specification.

  • Ultra-realistic 3D renders (and walkthroughs if needed)
  • Final material choices and key detailing (edging, steps, walls)
  • Lighting plan and electrics provisions (sockets, heaters, pergolas)
  • Planting approach (structure, screening, seasonal interest)

Stage 4: Quotation, programme & pre-start planning

What happens

Purpose: confirm scope, costs, timeline, and the practical build plan.

Once the design and specification are agreed, we provide a detailed quotation. We also confirm the programme (project timeline), ordering lead times, and practical site arrangements.

  • Clear scope with itemised inclusions (and exclusions where relevant)
  • Project schedule and key milestones
  • Material ordering, delivery planning and storage on site
  • Neighbour considerations, access plans and site protection

Stage 5: Groundworks, drainage & structural build

What happens

Purpose: build a stable foundation that prevents movement, puddles and future failures.

This is the most important stage for long-term quality — and the one that’s hardest to “see” once the garden is complete. We excavate, set levels, create falls for drainage, and build the sub-base correctly for patios and paths.

  • Excavation and waste removal
  • Levels, falls and drainage strategy (including channels/soakaways if required)
  • MOT Type 1 sub-base installation and compaction
  • Foundations for walls, steps, pergolas and raised planters

Stage 6: Hard landscaping, electrics & finishing details

What happens

Purpose: create the premium finish — paving, structures, lighting and details.

With groundwork complete, we install the visible features: paving, decking, pergolas, walls, steps, and the “luxury details” like integrated lighting, outdoor sockets, and neat edging.

  • Patios, paths and steps installed with clean detailing
  • Decking, pergolas and outdoor living structures
  • Electrical installation (lighting, sockets, heaters, outdoor kitchen provisions)
  • Finishing: edging, jointing, alignment and clean transitions
The difference between “nice” and “exceptional” is usually the finishing: crisp lines, consistent levels, and lighting that makes the garden feel designed.

Stage 7: Planting, handover & aftercare

What happens

Purpose: soften the structure, establish the garden, and keep it looking great.

Planting is what brings the garden to life — and it should be designed to suit your lifestyle. Whether you want low-maintenance structure, privacy screening, seasonal colour, or a mix of all three, we plant with an “establishment” mindset so the garden settles quickly.

  • Soil preparation and bed finishing (mulch/gravel)
  • Planting plan implementation (structure + seasonal layers)
  • Turfing or seeding (and irrigation support where needed)
  • Handover: how to care for paving, planting, lighting and irrigation

Typical timeline: how long does a garden build take?

Every project is different, but many full garden transformations follow a clear rhythm:

We’ll always outline a realistic programme based on your scope and site conditions, especially for Milton Keynes gardens where clay soil and drainage planning can add complexity.
